Desiring: a much better year

Whittling away some time this evening. We'll be watching Neverwhere on DVD. the boy got it for me and I'm quite happy at the quiet end to this irritating year.

So here it is. a little meme to remind me what went on. Ah, 2003. May we never see another one like it.

______________________________________

What did you do in 2003 that you'd never done before?
I celebrated my birthday. Willingly.

Did you keep your New Year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't make resolutions. If necessary I make rules for myself but that action isn't bound to New Years (and I'm most likely to forget new rules made at the turn of the year).

Did anyone close to you give birth?
Jester's wifey gave birth to Fionna. Teeny, tiny wrinkly thing. she should be nicer looking by now. };> A couple of people I know got knocked up.

Did anyone close to you die?
Aunt Nina, last New Year's day, Uncle Frank in July and Sr Irene in early September. A bit of a sucky year for dodgy hearts and bad circulatory systems.

What countries did you visit?
Didn't leave the country, unfortunately.

What would you like to have in 2004 that you lacked in 2003?
A trip to Korea, positive/forward movement in the search for stage work, respect at the job.

What date from 2003 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
hm. Either 1/27 - road trip to SF, or 3/19 - boy's birthday & start of Gulf War II.

What was your biggest achievement of the year?
ugh. probably the road trip. Not exactly an achievement, but something I'm glad to have done.

What was your biggest failure?
god, where do I start? I guess not doing any theatre or even getting to *see* more theatre.

Did you suffer illness or injury?
Nothing out of the ordinary. Most things I suffer from I was born with - allergies and a bad back.

What was the best thing you bought?
Probably my new car. }:> I didn't want to have to buy it, but it's been good to me.

Whose behavior merited celebration?
i dunno. maybe my niece, but not for anything that's actually a good reason. But a little kid learning to walk and smile makes grown ups cheer.

Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
man, where do I start? Bush, Cheney, Ashcroft, Rumsfeld, Schwarzennegger, network news...etc.

Where did most of your money go?
rent.

What did you get really, really, really excited about?
travelling. And seeing Tori and Return of the King and Pirates.

What song will always remind you of 2003?
"Bring me to Life" Evanescence

Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? either. or mostly the same
ii. thinner or fatter? not sure. measurements are the same though I've lost weight. May be muscle mass...
iii. richer or poorer? I think I'm richer, but that's without counting.

What do you wish you'd done more of?
duh. Theatre.

What do you wish you'd done less of?
get exploited by work.

How will you be spending Christmas?
Spent it with the fam. Likely will do that again since otherwise would incur a tremendous fight.

Who did you spend the most time on the phone with?
I don't use the phone much but it's usually to talk with my Molasses when I do.

Did you fall in love in 2003?
a few times, mostly with the same guy.

How many one-night stands?
none.

What was your favorite TV program?
*shrug* I don't watch TV (since I don't own one). But when I can I watch the West Wing with the Squire.

Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
"hate" is a strong word. I never have, and hope I never do.

What was the best book you read?
since I've been lame I haven't really read any books other than game books. I did read Life after God, by Douglas Coupland, which messed me up for a little while. so that's usually the mark of a decent book.

What was your greatest musical discovery?
Frida soundtrack

What did you want and get?
A mixed CD of rock en espanol from my brother. I requested it from the middle bro but got it from BB. Got a very nice vacation to Gold Country in September.

What did you want and not get?
Peace on Earth. some respect, a stage gig, etc

What was your favorite film of this year?
Lost in Translation

What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Not telling, and 26.

What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
*shrug* coming into a lot of money so that I never have to worry about work/paying bills again.

How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2003?
heh. same as always: t-shirt and jeans

What kept you sane?
not what, who: my Molasses

Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
*shrug* I dunno. Most celebrity is unmerited. Maybe Jimmy Carter, for the five minutes I thought about him this year.

What political issue stirred you the most?
Dude, if you really must know then you haven't been reading this journal. Take your pick - the recall, the war, gay marriage, taxes, immigration, international relations, unemployment, health care insurance....

Whom did you miss?
all the lame people that moved away in '01 and '02. and then some...

Who was the best new person(s) you met?
*shrug* didn't meet a whole lot of new people. Maybe the Moonchylde and her Tom.

Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2003:
Political correctness is shit, but that doesn't mean your job won't depend on it. And there is just no pleasing some people.

Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:

there was a time when i thought that
Her destiny should've been my
Big Brave Nation
but instead her Medicine
now forgotten

"what do you plan to do with all your stories"
the new sheriff said,
quite proud of his Badge
we'll weave them through
every rocket's red glare
and huddled masses
you just lift your lamp
--"Scarlet's Walk"
--Tori Amos
