Going Bust at Getagerši

Getagerši turned out to be a bust in terms of finding any turf walls or anything else cultural. John says he's still happy with the negative evidence, because Getagerši appears as one of the poorest in the historical records. But nothing significant in the trench walls means that my profiling team may have to cool its heals for a bit.

We spent the day at Getagerši extending a couple of trenches by hand, making a couple of profiles, and arguing and discussing what they show. In the end, we all believe that none of these trenches have anything but natural sequences of soil in them, albeit some of them have curvy ups and downs that initially appear interesting, but really come down to unexplained microgeomorphology problems.

At another nearby farm, where the owner wanted to put in a new building, we had been using our machines to detect structures under the ground, but ended up with a fruitless search there as well. But that's because the farmer had earlier moved tons of earth to flatten out his land, and hadn't exactly made that point clear to us.

We have been reassesing our methods and schedule and probably will make adjustments pretty soon. In the meantime, it looks like we will be opening up some small trenches right here at Holar tomorrow, in order to look at the medieval town that used to be here. This weekend the prime minister and bishop of Iceland will both be here to lay a foundation stone for a nearby building, and there's a good chance they'll be coming by to see our project.

Tonight we play poker, and it sounds like a number of people are looking forward to it a great deal, so it should be a fun night.
