Mood:
not too worried

So, yes, we got the ultrasound done last Thursday. The rescheduling really wasn't that bad -- at least I wasn't in Singapore.

According to the pictures, we are most definitely having a boy. This makes it easier for hand-me-downs, since most of our friends have been producing boys. And, as one friend mentioned, at least we're keeping the gender ratio of our SF/F/Geek circle in the stereotypically appropriate area.

I've had a couple of well-meaning friends attempt to reassure me about potential parenting qualms, saying that there will be times when I'll torment myself with Coulda, Shouldas about Doing The Right Thing when raising our child. But, to be honest, I'm really not worried about Doing The Right Thing because my approach to parenting -- and Life, for that matter -- has been greatly influenced by my father's cooking.

Dad loves to cook because it's a tangible way for him to show his love and nurturing for his family. To him, recipes are suggestions and springboards, not gospel regulations. He'll take a base idea, add a little of This, some of That, and add in a bit of Something Different. After it's done, depending on how it turned out, he may decide that, next time, he'll try a little less of That, and, instead of Something Different, use Something Else.

I look at parenting with the same sense of adventure. No one technique is going to work with every child, so you have to keep an open mind and try to expand your toolbox as much as possible so you can try a lot of different things until you find out what works with this child in this type of situation. As long as you understand and try to keep true to the fundamentals, the kid will turn out fine, and all else is merely tactics.

Ideals are like stars; you will not succeed in reaching them with your hands. But like the seafaring man on the desert of waters, you choose them as your guides, and following them you will reach your destiny.
