I thought I'd already posted this, but I guess not.

The other day, I was getting something out of the car when I saw a beautiful rainbow appearing over the trees. I hurried inside, very excited. I've been showing Hunter the relationships between objects and their representations -- e.g. the photo of him with a horse, the toy horse he was holding, and his plush rocking horse -- and this was the perfect opportunity to match the picture in his Noah's Ark book with the real thing.

Hunter had just finished going to town on a batch of blueberries, so I cleaned him up as quickly as I could, took him out of his high chair, got his Noah's Ark book from the other room, and headed outside.

The exchange went something like this:

"Hunter! Look!" I point at the book, then the sky. "It's a rainbow!"

What? Is that a dog behind us on the other side of the fence?

"Rainbow! No, not the windchime -- up there!"

But it's shiny and it's moving and makes a really pretty noise.

I point at the book, then the sky again. "See -- that's a real rainbow!"

What's over there in the other yard?

"That's just a neighbor closing their back door. Look up! Up!"

What?

"Up there! See all the pretty colors?"

What? Oh, that. Yeah, whatever, Mom. Can I go play with the doggy now?

Gotta love a boy with a mind of his own (and I do!)
