Spooking the Staff (and me!)

Odd thing happened last night. We see patients till 7pm, and just a few minutes before 7, someone began knocking at our back door. And the knocker was persistent. Finally we opened it up to find a man, who stammered through some sort of thing about how he was working for ADT (a security alarm company) and they were running promotions, and if we would display a sign in our window, yada yada yada.

My hygienist (who had answered the knock finally - I never did hear it but the patient in the back operatory did) told him, through the minimally opened door, that we had all the security we needed, and weren't interested.

Now the back door of the office is clearly not a main entrance - it's a metal door with no window and a couple of locks on it. The back of the building is clearly not an entrance, except for staff. And the story sounded fishy. So this morning we called ADT and asked them about salespeople or promotions, and of course, they know nothing about it.

So we're now wondering what the guy's game was. What if we hadn't answered? There were at least four cars in the rear (fenced in) parking lot. Last night we were all a little spooked; I had to watch as the staff left, and when I left I was wary of someone jumping out of the shadows. (Nothing happened, obviously.) Every noise from out back (outside my office window) seemed like it was a potential intruder. But this morning, we're curious. My theory is that he wanted to gain access to check out the alarm system and see what sort of equipment was laying around. Most of the valuable stuff would only be valuable to a dentist - it costs a lot but you aren't going to be able to sell it to the local fence (whoever that is). But there are some computers, a laptop, flat screens, office sound system, and a bunch of little stuff that would be a real nuisance if someone stole it. Very little cash, no drugs.

Or were his motives more sinister? Okay, let's not go there.

Anyway, it had us a bit freaked out last night, and I was really quite nervous when leaving, even though it's fenced in and wide open. It's dark, and it's funny the tricks your mind plays on you when you're a bit spooked already.
