Getting past Chapter 7...
Previous Entry :: Next Entry

Here's a little oddity I just noticed about my own attempts at writing: most of the stories I've started have gotten to roughly Chapter 7, then I have lost the momentum.

I noticed this yesterday; I was reviewing the content of my thumb drive and adding some files to it from a story I was writing quite a while ago, and noticed that three of the "projects" stop exactly at Chapter 7. Okay, one of them was actually "8" because I was simply numbering the files as I went, and the first one I didn't number, then started with "1" on the second file (don't ask me why I did it that way, I haven't a clue). And one of them is one long file, and I think it's close to the same number of kB as the other projects which are split into different files.

Why the heck can't I get past this point in any of the stories I start? There are a few exceptions: I did finish one mystery which is apparently too short to submit as a novel (and I can't seem to pad it further) and I've finished a number of short stories (though none for quite a while...actually, none I'd admit to since I got MARRIED!!?!).

Is there a trick to it? (he asked rhetorically...)

I often wish I could jump to the end, find out what happens, as the rest of the tale comes out of someone else's imagination. (I've tried collaborating; it's never worked...I seemed to end up being the only partner who actually wrote anything...and then as usual I got bored...) I suppose that's the lazy person in me coming out. Or the avid reader/movie watcher. I really DO love to read...

I think I've got a couple of "projects" started that show some promise. Maybe someday I'll actually get the time to sit down and write without interruption during the day.
