Reading & writing - the right kind of weekend

Well, Dave finished reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows at about 7pm last night, handed it off to me, and I finished it just after 1am, because I Could Not Stop Reading. I don't even remember the last time I was so involved in a book that I just had to keep reading, no matter what. Stopping for dinner felt like torture. I've stayed up late reading from time to time in the last couple of years when I had already gotten to the climax of a book by bedtime, with just 50-100 pages left to read...but this time, at my normal bedtime, I had 300 pages left, the climax was nowhere in sight, but I Could Not Stop. There's some kind of bottled magic in those books, and oh my God, would I love to learn the writing trick of it! I think it comes down to fabulous writing - not on the line-by-line, stylistic level that people always nitpick in JK Rowling's books, but on the massively more important level of sheer storytelling and emotional connection. No spoilers, but I loved it all.

This morning, we caught a cab out to Borders for Sunday breakfast (apple & cinnamon muffin, mmmm), and now we're back playing with Maya. In a few minutes, we'll start watching more Doctor Who. It's been a good weekend so far.
