Training a Cat

Yup, I am trying to train my cat to accept her harness. She does not like it. I left it on her all last night. After about 3 minutes of her trying to rub it off, and her falling off the couch, she settled down next to me. This morning she jumped on the bed as normal but there was no meowing for her breakfast. She followed me into the bathroom, but she just layed on the floor-none of her normal shenanigans. No looking for head rubs and ear scritches. Hmmm. I went back into the bedroom to get dressed and she stayed in the bathroom looking pathetic. She didn't follow me into the front of the apartment. Didn't come when I called-Normally I would almost trip over her as she would be begging for food. I fixed her meal and then went to the bathroom and carried her into the living room. I put her down and she still didn't follow me. I went back to where she was and removed the harness. I called her and shook her harness and she followed me to her food. I left her eating.

The harness is not snug. She can move freely. The only reason we are using it is because of the trip we are planning in August. We are planning on putting her in a cage the size she was in at the shelter during the car trip so she has room to move around and eat and use litter if need be. It is a long drive and we will not be letting her out into the 'wilderness'. We need to make sure we have a control method from the van to the room etc. Harness and leash will do that safely with out choking or scratching us. We do not know how well she will travel. And we are hoping that we can set this up that if she wants to look out the window she can, if she doesn't want to-her choice. She has been fine on short trips to the vet in her normal carrier-but that would be too confining and too hot for the trip to Illinois. We even have a portable fan that we are going to be setting up to make sure air circulation is good for her. The van's air conditioning broke down several years ago and we have not repaired it-we don't use it enough to make it worth the while. Open windows work wonders. Cat will not be left in van alone at all!
