Musings About Writing and Stories About Life

She's like the girl in the movie when the Spitfire falls
Like the girl in the picture that he couldn't afford
She's like the girl with the smile in the hospital ward
Like the girl in the novel in the wind on the moors

All sorts of stuff

Well, the folks in Korea definitely want Ken, for up to 10 days, so he’ll be pushing the Portland trip ahead/later, and all this means (a) money for us but (b) he’ll be gone for most of July. Yay and grr, all at the same time.

Since it hasn’t really sunk in yet, I’m trying to think of positive things that I’ll do when he’s away. Like, do a detox diet, rent movies (Ken will watch just about anything and reasonably enjoy it, but I know there are some things he could give or take that I really want to see), get a lot of writing and weaving and such done, etc. I can carpool to events with folks, which is fun. (My car needs some TLC right now. Nothing’s about to explode, but I’m less comfortable with driving any distance in it right now. Once we get the $$ from these contract jobs, we’ll be sinking some of it into my poor sweet sexy girl.)

I went shopping today and picked up lots of weaving material. I’m helping make armbands for the Kingdom for a particular award, and I picked up some other colours as well for various projects. But I have to finish the second Baronial kneeling cushion first.

We went to the Newcomer’s Guild meeting tonight because it was on What to Do in Court and, well, Ken _is_ the Baronial Herald. I sat in the audience and interjected things. Then Giles and Giuseppe gave us a tour of their 1903 Victorian, which they’ve been renovating for about five years. It was heartbreaking to hear what former owners had done to the place. It’s stunning now, and yet there’s lots of work to be done.

I called Sarah earlier and we discussed ALNM, so now I know what happens next, and upcoming, which is great. Unfortunately, I developed a headache this afternoon and it still hasn’t gone away. I don’t think I’ll be able to do any writing tonight. Goddammit.

I received the correct contract for the reprint I sold, so that’s good. I also received a very swift rejection for a story I mailed the other day, but the editor said positive things about it, which is good because I really don’t know one way or the other about the story. It’s 10K, which limits the markets to which I can send it. And, another story of mine has made the first cut at another market, so now I get to gnaw on my fingernails for a couple of weeks until I hear about that. Normally I send stuff out and forget about it, checking occasionally to see if something’s been out a really long time and I should follow up on it. I have at least 20 stories in the mail, so even if I wanted to fret about this one or that one, I just don’t have the brain capacity to do so. But when a story’s close…
