Musings About Writing and Stories About Life

She's like the girl in the movie when the Spitfire falls
Like the girl in the picture that he couldn't afford
She's like the girl with the smile in the hospital ward
Like the girl in the novel in the wind on the moors

...through gold-coloured glasses

I suppose, at 11:30 p.m., I should get around to posting yesterday’s entry. I’m not entirely sure why I didn’t finish it, except for the fact that exhaustion hit me last night. I hadn’t slept well, so I finally gave up and went to bed early last night. I almost finished reading Barbara Hambly’s Wet Grave, and my eyes were burning and my head hurt, so I went to the bathroom one last time, came back to bed…and couldn’t keep myself from reading the last chapter. It was great, so I was glad I did.

And then I couldn’t sleep.

I was overtired, and when I get overtired, I can’t keep my brain from skittering across all sorts of unpleasant thoughts. I really hate that. I tried to focus on things that make me happy, on story ideas, but none of it seemed to work. When I did sleep, I had weird dreams. I woke up several times, etc.

I finally got up and by my first cup of tea, things were looking better. I ignored e-mail, because some of it irked me (being tired and cranky before I even read it), and proceeded to get a lot of copy editing done. In fact, this one _is_ done. Indexing starts tomorrow, and I budgeted myself an extra day to do the indexing, so I wouldn’t feel rushed. So, yay.

Then I answered all of the e-mail.

Somewhere in there, I got hit with massive cramps, so I took Midol and stomped around for awhile until it started to kick in. Then the caffeine in the Midol kicked in, and whee! I was off and running again.

Amy/Maren came over this evening. We picked up a free pizza and settled in with our handwork to watch “Ring of Endless Light”, a Disney TV movie based on the Madeleine L’Engle book. I say “based” loosely. It wasn’t horrible, but it wasn’t the book, and there was some stupid stuff added to make it more “exciting” or something. This was something I’d taped months ago so we could watch it, and it turned out the ending was cut off. We didn’t even care, really. So we watched an old tape of a “So Graham Norton” so Amy could see what it was like, and talked a lot. I hemmed a barbette (chin piece) in yellow silk to go with my yellow veil to wear to Crown on Saturday, and Amy worked on a shawl thing she’s making for me. See, Ceridwen has one—it’s like the base of a medieval hood w/o the hood part, or a short poncho—and it’s wonderfully warm and comfy. Amy’s knitting me one out of pretty, wonderfully soft purple yarn. And I will wear it at GWW and carry business cards and give them to anyone who compliments me on it, because we know she could sell a ton of them. They don’t take her long to make, either.

So, an excellent evening all ‘round. We should do this more often. She wants to see “Neverwhere”, so I think, in fact, that we shall do this more often.

In other good news, Ken _is_ coming home tomorrow! Yay, huzzah! We’ll spend the weekend together, and then he flies back up on Monday (but not stupidly early), and then he flies back Friday afternoon, so we’ll have time to regroup and get ready for Collegium. (Meg’s riding with us, and will arrive at our place at 8 p.m. on Friday, and then we’ll head out to the motel.)

We’re going to haul out the electric saddle stapler and see if it works. If it does, I’ll have the new Combat Booklet covers printed, and then I’ll just rip off the old ones and staple on the new ones, rather than removing all of the staples. It’s not going to be fun or fast, but it’s a decent compromise.

I’ll have one more journal to copy edit before GWW, and then a few days off before the War itself, which I’m really looking forward to. I’ll write, and maybe make some new garb, and catch up on various things, and pack in a leisurely fashion for the War. (Well, knowing us, probably not that last bit.)

So, a day that started kinda crappy ended up being quite nice indeed. That’s my kind of day.

Oh, and last night, I painted purple crescents on my parasol, and it looks awesome!

And in other news, this evening my computer monitor turned yellow. It wasn’t an unpleasant colour, really, but it made some of the other colours look odd, and I feared death was imminent (rebooting and Degaussing did nothing). But as I was talking to Ken, it went back to normal. I think I’ll have him find another monitor in the garage and leave it somewhere accessible, just in case.

Uh oh, now it’s flickering between white and yellow. Now _that’s_ annoying, and answers my question of whether I should work a little more or watch “Dharma & Greg” and go to bed. Hopefully the monitor will survive the day tomorrow. If not, well…I probably jinxed things by saying that I’d given myself extra time to do the indexing. (And as I finish typing this paragraph, it stops flickering. I’m so not going to push this luck any longer. G’night!)
