She's like the girl in the movie when the Spitfire falls
Like the girl in the picture that he couldn't afford
She's like the girl with the smile in the hospital ward
Like the girl in the novel in the wind on the moors

No, that would make them Robotos

I’ve been watching “Mad About You” reruns, because I’ve always loved that show. I keep forgetting to mention, however, that in one season, Jaime goes to work as a campaign manager for a guy running for mayor of NY (I think it’s mayor, anyway)—played by Harry Groener, the evil mayor from “Buffy”. It was bizarre because in “Mad About You”, he’s bumbling, neurotic, and confused—and yet I can almost see that hint of evil… Interestingly, I just noted on imdb.com that he’s in a 2003 series called “The Mayor”. Coincidence? Probably not, given the huge range of characters he’s played.

Anyway, in the episode I watched today, who should guest star but Seth Green! Too funny.

In Sunday’s paper (which I’m still reading), there’s a big article about how some women are having foot surgery to shorten their toes so they can still wear high heels. People, people, did we learn _nothing_ from Cinderella’s stepsisters? Creepy.

All afternoon, I felt like I was wasting time; I wasn’t getting anything useful done and the time was slipping away.

Things started to look up, though. I’ve been letting my subconscious play with an idea for the Anthology From Hell (yes, that’s what it’s called—the idea is to take a hell cliché and put a twist on it). The “voice” of the story hit me this afternoon, so I typed up about 450 words.

Then I went out to the sewing studio and finished the man’s tunic I started last night, and cut out a pair of pants. Then, because there was still black thread on the serger, I made a black linen tunic for myself (just need to hand-hem the neckline and machine-hem the bottom hem). Tomorrow I’ll switch the serger to white thread and finish the pants, and then I can send that package off to the person distributing stuff to the fire victims. I’ve got lots of donated fabric, though, so I may make more, or see if I can organise a sewing day and get a few helpers.

I took a notebook and pen out with me, though, and wrote another 500 words or so on the story in between sewing. That was spiff.

So I started to watch “Battlestar Galactica” tonight, for my evening workout. Now, I’m a huge fan from way back (the first fan fic I ever wrote was BG, thank you very much), and I’m already wary about this new version. (How can Starbuck be a woman?! I mean, please. Even if she’s cute, it’s not going to be the same.) But I’m going to give it a chance.

I turned it on, and the first thing are some words: “Humans created the Cylons.” Did they? I don’t remember that. Next words: “They were created to make life easier for humans on the 12 colonies.” “No!” I shouted at the TV. “That would make them ROBOTOS!”

Then I turned it off and came in here to relate that. I’m going back to try again now.

Nope, she’s not cute. But Baltar is, which is just messing with my head.

Hm. Well, overall, not bad. (Warning: Spoilers ahead!) I’m not sure why they did this as a BG remake; it would have worked fine as a whole new world. Because it doesn’t make sense to say this is set 50 years after the last story, but all of the characters have the same names.

I find it hard to believe that they bother to have this “outpost” where every year a human goes to meet with the Cylons, and when the Cylons never come, nobody is concerned. And then, when the outpost is annihilated, nobody notices?

But there were bits that were great. The Cylons as their own fighter ships was absolutely brilliant. I exclaimed out loud over that, because it was totally creepy and unique. I loved how they used the “antique” ships from the museum.

It’s grittier than the old series, and there’s a lot more sex. A lot more. Even though the old series had a hooker (oh, excuse me, “Socialator”, like calling it something different makes it different), there was a lot less sex.

Overall, I have to keep reminding myself that it’s a different show; I have to pretend there wasn’t an old show. But I miss the old show. I discovered it’s available on DVD, and at some point I’m going to have to pick that up…

After Cat came home from band tonight, we watched a couple of “So Graham Norton” eps: one with the women from “What Not to Wear” so we could make fun of their awful clothes (does the word “bra” mean anything to either of them?), and the one with Anthony Head, because she absolutely had to see it. We kept having to rewind to watch the good bits. Hee!

So, overall, it turned out to be a pretty darn good day. I’m going to try to hit 1K on the story, and then it’s off to bed with me. ‘Night!
