She's like the girl in the movie when the Spitfire falls
Like the girl in the picture that he couldn't afford
She's like the girl with the smile in the hospital ward
Like the girl in the novel in the wind on the moors

Contests I always win

I _still_ have a headache. Dammit. Headaches are supposed to go away when you sleep. That’s the rule. Although I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised that my body doesn’t follow the rules. Anyway, the headache is mostly beaten back with Tylenol Sinus, so I should be able to get some work done today.

If I can find my desk under the explosion of paperwork, that is.

So, in (potentially) good news, our health insurance is finally sorted out. (This mess started in October.) We’ll see what happens when I try to pick up my prescription today.

Meanwhile, Eostre’s tests came back looking fine overall, but they want to do an EKG now. Gods only know how much that will cost. But it will help them decide what type of anæsthesia she can handle when she gets her teeth cleaned (or, gods forbid, something else happens), so I suppose it’s kind of insurance for the future. The wee furry ones continue to hold their status of Most Expensive Cats in the World.

(That’s one of two contests I can always win. The other is Worst Eyesight of Any Sighted Person in the Room.)

So, right. I installed InDesign yesterday. It will take the place of Pagemaker, which they don’t make for OS X. In fact, you can pull Pagemaker documents right into InDesign, so that was partly why I made the choice to go with it. Plus that hefty discount for being a former Pagemaker owner. But, InDesign doesn’t have a build booklet plug-in, which is crucial for making booklet-sized documents. Why a $700 (new) design program can’t stick in this measly feature is beyond me. So I also bought the after-market plug-in (recommended by Adobe) for this job. Only to discover yesterday that InBooklet is for InDesign 2.0, and I have the upgraded InDesign CS. After some searching around, I learned that I can get the free InBooklet upgrade because I ordered it after September 2003. I sent the e-mail request yesterday, but have heard nothing. I have a newsletter to get out by early next week, folks. This does not bode well.

Of course, half the people who are supposed to send me things for this issue haven’t (including the Baron/ess), so it’s going to be a mighty skinny issue.

Oh blah. Today’s calendar model has a belly piercing. Yeccch. There, I put a Post-It over it.

I’m having a hell of a time getting anything accomplished today. I’m not sure why. It might be because I’m getting overwhelmed at all of the projects that seem to be rearing up, or that I’m tired and headachy, or a combination of both. The desk is reasonably cleaned off, though, and I’ve answered some e-mail, and gotten the new Sage job prepped to start. I wish I had a maid, because the house is messy and dirty and distracting. I also wish I had a laptop (and I’ll not we’ll be buying a laptop before Ken leaves again, so that we both have laptops), so I could sit somewhere else and work, because I suspect that a change of scenery would actually help right now. But these are excuses, and I just have to work through the lethargy and overwhelmingness and press on.

<><><>

I did press on. Got the copy editing done for the day, chatted with Cat for a bit. Ken had spent the day working on the bike (two other guys came over and they all did services on their bikes), and ended up being out in the garage until 11 p.m. Yeesh. But he came in finally, and we watched a good ep of “Tru Calling” ('though with an ending that made me throw the fake rocks at the TV), and now we’re headed to bed.

Oh, and the InBooklet people e-mailed me to say I had to fax them my receipt to prove the date I ordered it. Not having easy access to a fax machine, I scanned the receipt and attached the .pdf to a reply e-mail. We’ll see…
