Musings About Writing and Stories About Life

She's like the girl in the movie when the Spitfire falls
Like the girl in the picture that he couldn't afford
She's like the girl with the smile in the hospital ward
Like the girl in the novel in the wind on the moors

Lucky 13

Damn. DAY-amn.

This is honestly the first free moment I’ve had. This has been one of the most intense weeks of my amusing little life. I’ve tapped deeper into my creative subconscious than ever before—and I may get a few sales out of it.

I’ve written proposals until I’ve dreamt in present tense. I’ve written stories. I’ve discovered I’ve forgotten more about Star Trek than I remember. I’ve learned BattleTech might just be a truly cool universe to play in. I’ve been close to tears more than once. I’m having a _blast_.

I managed to combine the SCA with Star Trek: SCE.

And I gave Worf a tribble from the mirror universe. He named it Precious.

(Hold on while I stop giggling madly. This is what we call Dayle suddenly releasing a bucketload of stress.)

I’m just finishing up the last official assignments. However, we’ve been encouraged to over-achieve (a necessary trait for a writer, really), so I’ve got several more projects to work on. As I said, some will probably result in sales.

Work for hire is both fun and insane, and if I take anything away with me, it’s that it’s crucial to balance it with original writing. I hope I can do that. I can see where WfH can be narcotic.

I’ve also got a pile of projects to work on when I get home. Which leads me to the other news…

It looks like we’re be in our new house in less than a month!

The For Sale sign went out in front of our house before we actually put it on the market. The first day it was up, the daughter of the people we bought the house from saw it, talked to Ken, and raced off to talk to her Realtor. After some dickering about the price, we came to an agreement—which includes us not having to do a damn thing to the house (not paint the peeling porch, not fix the stain on the living room ceiling, _nothing_). She’s a loan officer so she’s pushing through a fast escrow, _and_ letting us stay in the house for two weeks rent free. (We’ll actually be at CCR for about a week during that, though.)

We’ll come back from CCR, pack up a few final bits, and be in our house on 6 September, unless plans change.

Holy crap, dude!

So, the schedule looks something like this:

Write Battletech story #1 on plane and get it to Loren.
Arrive home from airport and go to Realtor’s to sign papers
Write and pack and design final GP, all for about two weeks.
Go to CCR. Sit in nice hotel room and write while Ken does geeky bike things.
Return home, pack bed and TV, move to Oxnard.
Almost immediately leave for Styxfest in Lincoln City.

Once we get back from _that_, other than an event and a SFWA cocktail party, we’ll actually get to cocoon in our new house for a good three weeks before we go to Great Western War.

You’d think I’d be stressed about this, but for the most part, I’m not. We have time to pack. I have only one more GP to do. Ken’s already done a lot of the packing and sorting; he’s busted his very cute butt dealing with negotiating with our buyer and Realtors and loan people.

Okay, back to work!
