More pics of River and a brief update

Hi all. I thought I'd let the River fans among you know that I posted a new set of photos of River, mostly from the last two weeks. I'm pretty sure that I'm overdoing it -- that most of you won't want to page through another 23 pictures of my incredibly sweet and adorable son, but just in case you do, you can see the new set of photos here.

Recovery for me is going very slowly. There are complications with the healing of the scar, which I won't go into in detail but I will say that it's both painful and gross. Also, we seem to have developed a case of thrush, or at least I have (based on the deep stabbing pains after nursing), and so we both get to be treated for that as well. Fun. Nursing is going ok -- still not a perfect latch, but we're working on it. Once we get that down, we can use a pacifier, which might make getting the baby to stay asleep when we set him down more likely. We can only hope. It will make more sleep possible for all three of us.

Otherwise, we're doing ok. Tim went back to work this week, which makes things harder on me (my doctor re-upped all my heavy pain meds thanks to the c-section healing so poorly, so I'm slightly out of it now). Thank goodness for good friends who have been coming by to help out this week. Mostly I just have them hold/ watch the baby while I sleep or shower, but I've also had to have help getting to a different doctor's appt. every day this week so far. If it weren't for David and Susan, I'm not sure how I would've made it out of the house (I can't carry the baby in his carrier -- too heavy, and now I can't drive again b/c of the heavy meds).

One bonus moment on Tuesday -- because Susan was waiting for me in the waiting room during my appointment, she ran into Dan and N, who just had their baby on Saturday, so I got to see them and meet baby Rowan after my appt. Very cool! Everyone always wants to see a new baby of course, but I'd been afraid that with the newness of both of our babies it would be awhile before we could arrange it; I was happy to let serendipity give us a joyful moment there. Rowan is adorable and his parents both looked so incredibly happy -- there really is something about the smile of a brand-new parent, isn't there? I am looking forward to playdates once the boys are old enough to be aware of the other one's existence (well, we'll hang out before that, which will be fun for the grownups, but eventually the close ages will be fun for the kids, too). Insert your own Rowan down the River joke here.

Ok, River woke up crying and interupted this entry, and it's hours later now. I am thrilled that I managed to soothe River without putting him to the breast, which, honestly, has been my go-to method for getting him to stop crying (which makes times when he's, say, strapped into his carseat and crying a little bewildering for me). I held him sideways and just swayed my hips in a figure-8 dance, and it was like I flipped a switch and turned the baby off. He's been sleeping for three hours now, which means it's time to wake him up and feed him (cruel, cruel necessity for newborns), but I'm hoping I'll have luck getting him back to sleep again soon after. Yay! Am soothing superstar!

It's amazing how a little sleep and a succesful soothe can change your outlook. Baby steps. Heh.
