Bill Cunningham

I recently watched a documentary about Bill Cunningham and am mesmerized by this person. He's more than a fashion photographer because he's made street fashion an art infused with his quirky insights that have become legendary and trendsetting. A writer for The New Yorker wrote, "Cunningham has often been described as a fashion monk, but he is closer to an oblate - a layperson who has dedicated his life to the tribe without becoming a part of it."

Cunningham's eye is poetic and he uses a camera to script all it sees. But more than anything, including his uncanny ability to make everything ordinary look as extraordinary as it really is, his lifestyle grabbed me hard with such respect for the priorities and sensibilities and faith he applies to fashion his own life. He doesn't budge from the high standards he's set for himself. He operates with a standard of impeccable integrity that I've never encountered before. Everything, and I mean everything, is humble about him - yet he reigns as one of the greatest street photographers ever.

Don't shy away from this film because it might seem to be all about fashion. I don't give a whit about fashion and trends, yet consider Cunningham my new hero.

You can catch Bill Cunningham's documentary on Netflix.
