Today has been a nice day. Did a few errands, hung out with Greg, saw "Space Station 3-D" at the IMAX theater. It was very, very, very hot today, so spending time in an air-conditioned theater was a wonderful thing.

Just got back from Bookstar, where I witnessed the type of parent/child interaction that my parents would not have tolerated. Let's describe the family:

  • Mother - young, Goth-y,
  • Father - young, Gothy-y, computer geek
  • Girlchild - around 8-10 years old, normal-looking
  • Boychild - around 4 years old, normal-looking

I was over in the kids section of the store when I heard an awful noise. The boychild was squeezing one of those books that make noises - you know, the books that you give to other people's children.

Boychild: Phlbbbt

Mother: Stop making that awful noise.

Boychild: Phlbbbt

Mother: I said stop it.

Boychild: Phlbbbt

Mother: I'm not buying you anything.

Boychild: Phlbbbt

Mother or Girlchild takes the book away.

Boychild: Why are you so mean today?

So far, nothing too bad. I would have been smacked by this point, but...

Boychild: Is this Sponge Bob?

Mother: No, it's a monkey.

Boychild: Then what the heck is that?

At this point, I realize two things: Boychild knows how to adequately throw mild profanity into a sentence, and he has also increased the volume of his voice to a decibel level which can only lead to bad things.

Little running footsteps. Suddenly, I was face-to-face with Boychild. I was apparently blocking his escape route:

Me: Hello.

Boychild: Hello.

No movement.

Me: Go on, little boy.

Running footsteps. Father followed.

Father: Don't run.

Running

Father: Stay where we can see you.

Boychild: I don't love you!

Father: Come here, Elric.

Boychild: Get away from me, you fucking idiot!

Much screaming ensued. The family left.

They named the child "Elric". Fucking idiots.
