The Case for Kerry: Part 1/2

With the election coming up soon, I thought I'd take some time in the next few weeks to detail why my vote is going to Kerry/Edwards.

I don't have the time or energy to write a really detailed description tonight, but I would like write about one quick thing.

There was a point in the second debate that spoke to me as a voter. George W. Bush was talking about partial birth abortion and how "his opponent" voted against the ban. John Kerry very clearly said in his retort that the world is very complex and that it wasn't a clear black and white issue because there wasn't any stipulation in the bill about the procedure taking place because of concerns about the health of the mother or baby. George W. then turned around and said that it was a "black and white" issue and that when Kerry had the chance to vote for the bill he voted "no."

Kerry is many things to many different people. Ambiguous? Sure. Wishy washy? Maybe. But one thing he definitely is, is nuanced. He realizes that the world doesn't exist in black and white and that much of the issues that we are faced with exist in grey. And I couldn't agree more. After four years of "with us or against us," "evildoers," and "liberal and conservative" it was good to hear a politician like Kerry actually address nuance.

It reminded me that there is a difference between a conservative (like a John McCain or Rudy Guiliani) and an ideologue (like Cheney and Bush). It also reminded me that a lot of the world exists in grey, and not in black and white.

more to come later.
