I'm going to do a formal Oscar post closer to the Academy Awards but I wanted to take a moment or two to comment on *some* of the nominees.

The Academy Awards are NOT about acting, directing, and movie skillzzzzzzzz. There are a lot of politics involved. I'd say that they "get it right" most of the time, but I'm looking in your direction "Shakespeare in Love."

I'd have to say that "The Aviator" has to be the early front-runner. I'd be hard pressed to find a movie that leads the pack with 11 nominations and doesn't win the Best Picture award. Especially when you factor that it has 4 more Oscar nominations than the next leading candidate, or candidates (Million Dollar Baby, Finding Neverland) in this case.

Jamie Foxx kicked ass and had two nominations this year. Kudos to him. There were so many great acting performances this year. Sadly, the actress category seemed a bit lacking in pizzazz. A couple of years ago, there were some really great roles for women like Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, Meryl Streep etc. But this year, it seems that the actresses are once again being overshadowed by the actors. Just when you think Hollywood is making great strides, they fall back into their patterns. But the fact that both Don Cheadle and Jamie Foxx received nominations for their roles shows that maybe Hollywood has finally gotten over their "race" thing. Let's hope so anyways. The fact that Morgan Freeman has never won an Oscar makes me want to break things.

Although if I'm a betting man, which I'm not, then I think this is the year Morgan Freeman finally gets his.

I think that it's a toss up between Leonardo DiCaprio and Jamie Foxx for Best Actor. Although I haven't seen the movie yet, I think that Don Cheadle probably deserves the award since the man practically walks on water in my eyes.

This is Scorsese's year. Bet the house on it. But we'll see.

more to come later.

Matthew
