You know, I really didn't think that LOST would be able to keep up its forward trajectory, yet each episode of season 3 has proven me wrong. And based on the preview for next week’s episode, it looks as if the best is yet to come. Is there anything better than a Locke episode of LOST? I think not.

I recently read that some of the cast and crew thought that season 3 was going to be the best season yet. After watching the near perfect season one recently, I wondered if I would need to put those cast and crew members into Hurley’s insane asylum. But if these first two episodes are any indication, I have to say that I think they’re on to something.

I really dig the direction season 3 is headed. So far, the archetypes they have set up seem a lot more solid. I’ll comment on this in future posts, but Matthew Fox really seems to have settled into Jack Shepard. Sawyer is more 3 dimensional now, instead of being a bit of a caricature that he was in season 2.

Perhaps what has been most surprising is the level of depth the show’s producers and writers mined in regards to character back-stories. Jack’s flashback completely explained why he is the way he is. Not only that, but his flashback directly fed into what’s going on in his world right now. It’s now clear that “the Others” are out to rehabilitate “the Losties.” So it makes sense that we would get to see the insane origins of his control issues.

Jin and Sun’s flashback was amazing. I think I’d rank it as their best flashback actually. The great “LOST” flashbacks have always given us information about the characters’ pasts, while also servicing the story set up by the writers and producers. Some of the previous Jin/Sun flashbacks have lacked in both areas of this, but they really nailed it last night. Their flashback was deeply tragic and sad. I can’t wait to see where they go with it.

I really liked the Sawyer and Kate scenes. The chemistry between Kate and Sawyer is really strong and palpable. I thought that Sawyer and Kate’s kiss was one of the best moments of the entire series. I like where they’re going with Sawyer’s character.

And once again, Matthew Fox really stepped up to the plate with his acting. The look on his face when Ben showed him the Red Sox tape was a brilliant bit of acting on Matthew Fox’s part. You could read about a thousand different thoughts in about 30 seconds.

30 Rock

Tina Fey’s new sitcom “30 Rock” premiered last night. In case you don’t know, it’s the other NBC produced show about the inner workings of an SNL type show. I really liked it and can’t wait to see where it goes from here. The style of the show seemed really fresh and new, so I hope they’re able to keep it up over the course of the show.

As far as how it compares to “Studio 60,” here’s the SAT breakdown.
“Studio 60” is to “Grey’s Anatomy” what “30 Rock” is to “Scrubs.”

“30 Rock” is a little bit lighter and a little bit easier to watch, while “Studio 60” is a little more heavy and “artsy fartsy.” ← pretentious.

Studio 60

Still a good show, but I’m seriously starting to have my worries about how long this show can stay fresh. It all seems really cool right now, but by episode 30, are we going to tire of the endless “walk and talks” that Aaron Sorkin is famous for. Again, when the “walk and talks” are about National Security, Domestic Policy, or the inner workings of a high level scandal, there is an almost endless supply of material to pull from. But I have a feeling that it’s going to get really old seeing the producers/writers/actors of “Studio 60” walking and talking about a sketch comedy show. I’m interested to see how they keep it fresh.

It’s a great show, though. When it’s on, it’s hard to look away. It’s also yet another instance where television has eclipsed film as the best way to tell a story.

The NBA season is almost upon us. I can’t wait. Since the Astros are rarely a contender for the World Series, I always see baseball season as my off-season. And since the Cowboys-TO parade has left me feeling nauseated, I’ve been seriously jonesing for some good NBA action.

I also have a feeling that this is the year when the Spurs, Rockets, and Mavericks all contend for the division crown. It should be fun.

matt out
