What Costume Do You Wear When You Need Glasses?

Anya and I put on our costumes went down to Sixth Street last night. This was our first time to be on Sixth Street on Halloween, and I must say that it was a pretty fun night. We will upload the pictures we took sometime in the next few days, so be on the lookout for those.

I went as Clark Kent, complete with my suit, and my white shirt opened to reveal my Superman shirt underneath. I had a bright red piece of fabric sticking out of the back of my suit jacket. If I had to name my costume, I would call it Clark Kent/Superman in transition. It's a costume that's been done numerous times before, but it was still fun to put on.

Anya was Lois Lane, complete with a white sweater, skirt, brown wig, reporter notepad, and bright red lipstick. It looked very pre-Mary Tyler Moore 1960's. She's a lot better at this costume thing than I am. I saw a lot of Clark Kent costumes similar to mine, but at the end of the day, I had a Lois Lane, which makes our costumes reign supreme.

Part of the reason why I love Halloween so much is that it's one of the few days out of the year where people get to collectively let their freak flags fly and show a sign of creativity.

There were some really great costumes last night. I saw a lot of Sacha Baron Cohen creations, with a lot of Borats and Ali Gs, though no Brunos. There were of course numerous superheroes, mostly Spiderman, Supergirl, Batman, and Superman/Clark Kent. There were a few George W. Bush costumes, as well as a few Osama Bin Laden costumes, which surprised me. I saw a really great Rosie the Riveter costume. I of course asked her to do the pose.

The best costume of the night goes to the man who went as a MySpace profile. It was basically a box of some kind, painted to look like the standard MySpace profile, complete with a Tom included Friends list. The person's head stuck out of the place where the image would go.

I also really liked a Jack Skellington costume someone made. I actually saw a lot of Jack Skellington costumes, but this one had stilts and long arms, which gave it a nice air of authenticity.

There was a really great Cookie Monster costume, but you can tell that it was a costume that the person purchased from a costume store. Halloween costumes fall into two camps with me. There are those who go to costume stores, looking for pre-made costumes, and there are those who see what they can make with things from around the house.

I love both camps, but I vastly prefer costumes in which people piece things together with what they have lying around. Part of it is that I think it takes a little more creative energy to construct something than it does to buy a ready made costume, but the larger part of it is that at the end of the day, neither the ready made costumes nor the self-constructed ones look completely authentic. And because they don't look completely authentic, I think it's a little more humorous to see costumes in which you can tell how they did it.

If someone saw my costume closely, they'd see that I was wearing my own glasses, my own suit jacket, a piece of fabric tucked into the back of my jacket, a hat which looks unlike anything Clark would wear in the comics, and my big brown work shoes. As I said above, I saw a lot of Clark costumes last night, but they were all the same costume, probably made by the same company. I like that mine seemed a little more put together from scratch.

There's another camp of costumes that I have to mention. It's the "I don't give a rat's ass" costume. These are the people who wear a Superman shirt and call it a day. Or the people who wear a Jason Voorhees hockey mask and their graduation robe. Maybe I shouldn't say these people don't give a rat's ass, but it add another layer to the make a costume with what you have lying around. Luke could give more information about this, seeing how he wore a Darth Vader mask and red graduation robe to the Episode I premiere. Any thoughts on this, Luke?

That's all I got for now. I've wasted enough time at work.

PEACE!
