I just watched a brief but cool interview with LOST creator Damon Lindelof in which he talked about the number one question he gets asked the most about LOST; "What is the island?"

His answer was flat out brilliant. I've been having a little show anxiety about how they're going to close all of the unfinished loops on the show and which of the big questions they're going to answer.

For a long time, in regard to the "what is the island" question, I felt as if I wanted a very definite and concrete answer. But now, after hearing his answer, I'm not so sure just how in depth I want that answer to be.

Basically, he made the SW argument in responding to "which questions get solved" query. To paraphrase, were you satisfied with Ben and Yoda's description of the Force? Did you really need to know what the force was and how it worked? Wasn't Qui Gon Jinn's explanation about midichlorians such a buzz kill?

For 20 years, we really knew all that we really needed to know about "the force." And what we didn't know, we speculated on. And that, my friends, just completely captures what's so great about LOST. It's a show in which we will definitely find out what happens to Luke, Leia, Han, et al, but we don't necessarily need to know exactly how the Force operates and why it does what it does.

I have no doubt that we will get more explanation into the powers of the island and possibly where they come from, but I'm kind of glad that the showrunners are savvy enough to know that some things don't need 'splaining.
