An ENTRY, at long last

Well howdy! I've finally found some time to update this good ol' journal. Things have been pretty crazy, but in a relatively good way. I started my new contracting job yesterday, doing some tech writing for Glaxo SmithKline (converting a 500-page manual written in Word into HTML and WebHelp), and I have 19 mornings left on the accursed paper route (can you believe they wanted a 30-day notice? I've never given 30 days' notice at ANY job I was at!). And I have one more class to teach in my fiction writing class (which has turned out to be a fun, if draining, experience).

So, the mundane aspects of my life are starting to click into place, and I can start enjoying writing again. But before I get to that, I've got to introduce you to the newest member of the Jasper household: BOSS!

Boss is our new greyhound. Our other greyhound, Whit, needed a friend, and we wanted to adopt another former racer. Actually, I think I was the one who really wanted another dog, for Whit's sake and for myself, which is surprising -- Elizabeth has usually been the one to get the ball rolling on pet issues.

So Boss came home yesterday. He's a "blue fawn" about the same size and coloring as Whit, but he's a bit stockier and has a slightly curved nose as opposed to Whit's straight lines. I'll get some photos scanned in ASAP. Our little 1200-square-foot casa isn't really built for 2 dogs, 2 humans, and one large, surly orange cat (Pumpking ain't too happy about the new dog in his house, lemme tell ya!), but what can you do? Right now I'm hanging out in my office with Whit and Boss crashed out behind me. How cool is THAT?

Now, onto the writing. I've really let my writing slide in the past few weeks. The timing's been bad, as I'm supposed to be writing an entire novel this month, but... I'll get it done. I plan on jamming on the paranormal romance this week, and I'm psyched up about it. I've started working with some other writers in the Horror Writers Association as a sort of pseudo-Mentor, and in the process I've gotten very excited about writing the "scary stuff" again. So in the process of "paying it forward," I've managed to give myself a reward -- energy for my own writing. Very cool.

Finally, as the year begins to wind down (already! shit!), I have some final plans for what I want to accomplish before the year's up. This includes:
  • Completing a first draft of the spooky romance novel Heart's Revenge
  • Redrafting my story about bipolar lycanthropes (don't ask me to explain, just ask me to let you read it!) "Top of the Stacks"
  • Maybe writing a quick zombie story entitled "Life Begins After the Flesh"
  • Completing the last few chapters of my science fiction novel about Midwestern aliens The Wannoshay Cycle
  • Writing my historical/fantasy/baseball story about "The All-Nations Team"
  • Hopefully hitting the 200,000-word mark for the year (I'm at about 126,000 right now)
I can handle all that, right? And if I have time, I'd love to revise my other 3-4 novels and start sending them to more agents and publishers.

"If I have time," he says. It is to laugh... Later!
