Busy Writing, But Not (Enough) Fiction...

Man, filling out job applications, printing off resumes, and writing cover letters for jobs really really SUCKS!!!

Okay, glad I got that off my chest. That's what I did all morning, sending off 4-5 applications (I'm not even sure any more) instead of doing my usual fiction writing, and as Elizabeth can attest, I was cussing the whole time.

I just hate jumping through the hoops, you know? Applying for jobs makes submitting stories to editors look like child's play. You gotta customize the cover letter, tweak your resume, and if you're REALLY unlikely, fill out a ridiculously detailed application (I mean, really, who CARES where I went to freakin' elementary school???). Argh.

It ended up taking more time than I'd ever expected it to, and it was about 2 p.m. before I had time to get to the edits from my writers' group for my story, "Death in the City." But thanks to the excellent comments from Jason and Scott, along with Derek, Samantha, and Rob, I was able to really fix up the story and get that out the door today as well.

I also managed to revise my other story, "My People's Bugs," thanks to some fine comments by Derek that really helped me see what I needed to do to make the story work. I have that one out to a couple other folks, and I feel like it's pretty close to being ready to send out as well, which would bring me up to 20 submissions out there again.

One of these days I plan on looking hard at possible reprints of past stories, and maybe even looking into get stuff reprinted at FictionWise, but I need a couple more print sales to really make that worth my while. One of these days...

But first, got to finish the Wannoshay novel, which I lost momentum on this weekend with the various stories and other projects. And maybe I'll even have a job lined up soon so we won't have to sweat the bills... Later!
