Things to Do in Raleigh When it's Wednesday...

Sure, you could stay home and watch more reruns on TV or see what's new with the latest reality BS show. You could get caught up on your reading and all that.

Or you could get your ass up and go see some up-and-coming comics here in the Raleigh area, before they make it big.

My co-worker, Denis McDonough is one of the featured comics Wednesday, June 8th here in Raleigh, at Charlie Goodnight's.

This is the place in Raleigh (and pretty much all of North and South Carolina, if not Virginia and parts west, where the men are men and the mountain goats are nervous). Goodnight's is where people like Jerry Seinfeld, Jay Leno, Chris Rock, Dennis Miller, Drew Carey, Ray Romano, Kevin James, Ellen Degeneres and even Robin William have performed, and they have the signed, framed photos to prove it on the walls. It's a cool place.

And I have a strong feeling that my man Denis is going places, soon, with his comedy act -- he's got the burning desire to do it, and I wouldn't doubt it if he'll be moving on to bigger and better things, soon. So this is your chance to see Denis and some of his stand-up friends before they make the big-time. (He'd better get me a writing job on his sitcom when he gets it, dammit!)

I've noticed a lot of similarities between chasing the fiction-writing dream and chasing the stand-up comic dream -- it's all about doing your time and improving yourself, through practice and experience and hard work. It's perseverance and drive and wanting it. The nice thing about writing is that there's no microphones or public speaking involved... I just toil away early in the morning, while Denis and his fellow comics work late into the night (there have been some mornings at work where he's told me he went to sleep at 4 a.m. after a show, and I told him I'd gotten up at 4:30 a.m. to write before work -- how's that for contrasting worlds?).

So go, check it out, get some laughs, all for $5. I plan on being there. Later!
