Back at it again

I survived a wild, fun weekend that started off with us almost buying a used BMW on Friday (we came to our senses once we looked at our finances on Saturday!) and continued with a surprise visit from my sister and her family, who drove all the way from Iowa to North Carolina on Friday (and made it in about 16 hours!). I uploaded a pile of photos to our online album, for those interested (I'll try to add some funny captions today).

Then I had a pretty good Intro to Flash class over at NC State yesterday, so today feels like a Monday, but it's actually a Tuesday. Not a bad deal.

I'm hoping to really throw myself into learning this Flash software, so I can expand my "repertoire" into creating online animations and eventually interactive courses and simulations for work -- Flash gurus make more than editors, and I'm all about getting more dinero for my eight hours a day. Got those bills to pay off, and the Esquart isn't gonna run forever... I dread the thought of a second car payment -- I've not had once since '97!

Got a free book in the mail yesterday -- Jack Dann's Rebel. He did something I don't really agree with, sending out emails to members of SFWA to get them to read his book and hopefully recommend it for a Nebula, the writing association's version of the Oscar. But it's a free book, and the first chapter I read was pretty good (if a bit thin). I like alternate histories (I'm sorta writing one myself) and since I'm not buying any books right now until I get caught up on my own reading, I couldn't say no.

Speaking of writers, I've been enjoying the blog of Dean Wesley Smith, who's writing I think his fifth novel of the YEAR right now. He's been writing full-time for over 15 years now, so go read his blog and gete some insight into how it's done. His biggest secret -- never stop learning. That, and work harder than anyone else.

That's why I was up at 4:30 this morning, working on my baseball novel again. I have some research into Taoism and acupuncture and herbal medicine to do today to write a new mini-scene, and then I'll contine with chapter 14. It's humming along nicely (though I cringe at some of my sparser sections I wrote in my mad rush last summer -- exactly a year ago).

So here's the progress o' the day:

Whew. How's that for an update? I still have the next Tim Powers book to read, along with the Joseph Campbell Hero book as research for the Next Novel, not to mention the piles of New Yorkers sitting here in my office, gathering dust. At least I got to flip through last week's as my ancient computer churned its way through the antivirus updates and did a scan that took a couple hours... Later!
