Opening lines shared...

Because everyone else is doing it, here are the opening lines to my current works-in-progress (I really need to get to work on some more short stories!):

Sixteen Miles From Everywhere (novel):
The day I lost Noah for the last time started out just like dozens of other days that summer.

Shards (short story):
My brother never used to be like this. I mean, I was supposed to be the one in the family who got all worked up about things like ghosts and spirits and weird lights in the night sky, not Mitch. I was the one who still talked with Mom every day, even though she'd passed away close to a year ago.

Dead Man's Rope (novella or novel):
Thousands of nights like this had already passed by me when I woke today next to you, sore and uninformed. I found myself aching for a loss I've never experienced, a life I've never lived. I pulled myself from the bed next to you and knew that I had to leave.
