Garden Notes

Deep watered garden last night. The weeds are flourishing with the water and the sunlight. The vegetables aren't doing badly, either.

Bush peas and tomatoes seem to get along together quite well (tomatoes don't like the company of pole beans); though the tomatoes have lots of greenery and flowers, I'm not seeing very many little green knobs. Yet.

Picked peas this morning and pulled three beets. We eat the greens as well as the beet root. The beets are flourishing, beyond all expectation. This the first harvest, so it will be interesting to taste them. Root crops' flavors vary with the soil nutrients available to them, and I've never grown beets before.

The squash leaves are green, but not growing much, nor are the bright yellow blossoms doing anything but opening then wilting. I don't know what's wrong with them, because usually squash and zucchini are vigorous and spreading and productive. Oh, well, they're decorative, at least.

Beets and peas for dinner. Guess I'd better think of something with protein to go along with them.
