Flaunt vs. Flout
Previous Entry :: Next Entry

My friend B and I are having an ongoing argument about the two words "flaunt" and "flout".

Regardless of the dictionary definitions, she says that in useage the two words mean the same thing.

I say no, though they can be closely related. If you wear a very low-cut dress to church, you are flaunting your femine charms, and, in addition, flouting convention, and probably church rules as well.

She says you can use either word interchangeably, that they are just different pronunciations and spelling of the same word.

Please help us resolve this one.
