The Things I Miss in Winter

Using a clothesline.
Once April starts, I look at every non-rainy day as an opportunity to hang out the clothes. I like that I’m saving money and wear-and-tear on my clothes while giving them a fresh smell. My grandmother almost never used a dryer for most of my childhood, and certainly never when the weather was good enough to hang dry. Later in life she used the dryer because it wasn’t possible for her to lift all that stuff from the basement to the yard and up onto the line. I loved to run between the flapping sheets and towels. I loved to hide in the rows they created. And I loved helping to fold. These days, I just love doing it myself. I even love the stiffness of the bath towels. I would like to use an interior clothesline, but my apartment is so cold that, for as long as I needed to leave the clothes up in order for them to dry, they’d just as likely mold as dry. Fifty-fifty is bad odds.

Wearing little-to-nothing.
Ask my mother, it’s been tough to keep clothes on me from day one. She would occasionally have to apologize to the neighbors as my wet five-year-old body slipped from her toweling hands and out into the yard. Zoom! I was free! This felt great! Not much has changed. Except I do my best not to scare anyone. Where’s my sarong?

Sleeping outside.
The sound of the waves, the glimmer of the stars, and perhaps a friend to sleep out with. Nothing better than that.

Eating cold food.
In summer, I enjoy daiquiri ice from Baskin-Robbins, margaritas from LaPlaya (the size of your head, and a major deterrent to driving home), and cold salads of every kind. I miss those fresh flavors in winter.

Extended motorcycle trips.
Each year in late spring, I become mobile in a whole different way. My motorcycle is my main mode of transportation, to destinations near and far. This summer is shaping up nicely. I will lead two rides, May and August, for my women’s riding club, and hope to take some other trips with a more romantic focus. Wherever I go, I’ll get there on the motorcycle.

The crisp air of September.
Dang, another 9 months before I feel that on my cheek again.
