Farmor is a Norwegian (and Swedish) word meaning, literally, "father's mother". This is my grandma, my nana. She was the best.

My grandmother graduated from high school in 1920, a time when most women didn't do that. She was from a village in northern Norway, 300 miles above the Arctic Circle. (Talvik, I hope to see you this summer.) She told me the cat's name was Muns, but I don't know that it meant anything. The Norwegian word mun means mouth, so maybe it was a good eater. Looks like a Norwegian forest cat. Hey, it's my mythology, so no apologies.

She was a raven-haired woman once she reached adulthood, unusual in Norway, unless you have Sami blood. I have studied the Sami people, and I think she did. Here she is with her nephew Bob and his bride Lorraine (who just celebrated 60 years of marriage last year).

On my graduation day. Crop from the pic posted on the Scout Chronicles, part deux.

Nana and Papa, about two years before they both passed. My grandfather drove until he was 89. My grandmother never learned, despite being the better educated and more level headed of the pair.
