2004-04-19 3:33 PM Libertarians of Costa Rica Previous Entry :: Next Entry Mood: sick Read/Post Comments (1) OLP Party Announcement
--- Hi: Jim has passed on this note from the Libertarians of Costa Rica. They are have been very successsful in being elected and are now starting to make a differance in that country as they battle increased taxes and try to roll back big government. You may want to subscribe to their newsletter. John The Costa Ricans elected six Libertarian Congressmen (out of 57) in February, 2002. One of them shortly resigned form the party shortly after taking office since he realized that he couldn't compromise his principles and that he felt "imprisoned". Jorge Codina, editor of their newsletter writes, "We have taken several steps to ensure that this type of problem does not happen again". (Is it just me or does that sound ominous?) The Libertarians in Costa Rica have started nationwide TV and radio programs. "La Hora de la Libertad" (Liberty Hour) is a 45 minute daily radio program which runs Monday through Friday at 6:15 PM. The format is a half hour of news and analysis followed by a 15 minute call in period. If you understand Spanish, you can listen to the radio program via Internet: http://www.adnsolutions.net/asx/reloj.asx The party is currently in a huge fight with the state against taxes. The Libertarians managed to kill a tax incrase bill last year, but it has been reintroduced. The Libertarians are the only group in congress to opposse the bill, and according to their polls, 83% of Costa Ricans are opposed to new taxes. Their next battle is going to being against the Insurance and Telephone monopolies in Costa Rica. They want to make these sectors completely open to all foreign companies.
