The other evening I started making a list of things I used to take for granted, but which are no longer part of my life. A daily newspaper: I get the occassional free throw, but that's usually the local rag. And without a daily newspaper I am clueless about which dreck to watch on TV. That's right--no TV schedule. Before my trip I looked for a TV Guide, but apparently the stores either didn't carry it or it sold out immediately. Before my trip (when I bought the paper at a store) the Sunday N.O. paper was really slimmed down, and had no weekly TV section.

And Channel 12 has disappeared. This was New Orleans' first PBS channel, and for years was the only one. It got badly flooded. I've heard nothing about whether/when it might be broadcasting again.

The two public hospitals in the middle of New Orleans were declared total losses. And Tulane Hospital didn't do too much better. That's two medical schools who have suffered badly. More than half the faculty of Tulane Medical School have been let go. I'm not sure about the LSU Medical School--it may have relocated partially to Baton Rouge. Several other hospitals were severely damaged by flooding and will not be reopening soon.

I don't even want to think about the universities. New Orleans has at least half a dozen large and small schools, all of which have been hit by declining enrollments. The schools are fighting hard and hoping that this year's storm doesn't have a negative effect on next fall's enrollment.

On the positive side, however, universities WILL be reopening next month, although some will be using other campuses than their own.

Less and less of the city is still under a curfew. And the City Council members are back to fighting with each other--this time over where the temporary FEMA trailers will go to house those residents without livable housing. (The operative word with this is NIMBY.)

On my side of the lake the biggest thing missing is the ability to get from point A to point B without being involved in a massive traffic jam.

I do wish the "new normal" would begin to appear. And I'd like to be able to check a TV schedule.
