That's what today felt like.

I woke up early, had some breakfast, then fell asleep again. When I woke up for the second time I got my act together somewhat and took a barrel of stuff out back to dump. Janice (pet-sitter) said she'd seen a turtle sunning itself on a step, but it wasn't doing that today. Lady trotted along behind me to see what was going on.

At some point I fell asleep again.

My next project was a long-deferred tidying up of paperwork etc. I'm making progress.

Luckily, when I got tired of doing that, I had a book to read. It's a new-to-me author and it's looking fairly good.

No afternoon showers today so it's still "warm."

As I said the other day, today is the second of two tax-free days. I figured my best bet was to stay away from areas with stores and I did. Tax-free means no state sales tax--which is 4%. There's a $2500 limit on purchases, and some categories to which this does not apply. The idea was to cut the cost of school supplies an iota.

Schools around here are opening as early as Monday for some, and not till mid-September for some others. (Schools traditionally open a couple of weeks before Labor Day.) But post-Katrina (in Orleans Parish) there are public schools, parochial schools, charter schools, and Recovery District Schools. And I have no real idea of what the differences are, except for the public and parochial. Public schools are generally not a point of pride for New Orleans, except for the magnet schools.

At any rate, that's why this date for the tax holiday for the state sales tax. The parish and local taxes are still there, and in St. Tammany Parish they add up to 5 1/4%.

And I shall try to make tomorrow not-a-blob day.
