Sooooooooooo.........

Well, my brother (the married one -- God, that sounds weird) got a job this week, and found an apartment, so he and Chaunna can have a normal newlywed life and not have to live with my parents, other brother, dog, and occasional boarding uncle. Kudos to him!

And uhhhhhhhhhhh......

I got the bound copies of my thesis today. It sucks. No, really. I read it, and I think I understand why I'm having such a hard time getting published. But, I do not see this as a bad thing, really, since it means I am now over the horrific stress out of finishing the darn thing and can look at it objectively. Plus, I think I may have finally figured out how to end the story of five thousand endings (seriously, I have never compeletely reinvented the end of a story as many times as I have for this one). It's really, really dark, and turns the narrator into a not very likeable person, but I think that's someplace I need to explore right now. I was so obsessed with not doing the whole brooding/life is hopeless grad student writing thing that I have avoided the darker emotions far too often in my work. (Hence the suckage.) So we'll ride this train for a while and see where it goes.

Other than that, life has been pretty bland. Well, I did hit the city on the 4th and caught Lyle Lovett and Calexico in a free concert at Battery Park (awesome) and hung around for the fireworks. The fireworks were also awesome, but I brought along my Walkman so I could listen to the soundtrack broadcast, and that was pretty cheesy. A sampling of the lyrics:
Man: It's time to let freedom swing!
Woman: You mean ring.
Man: No, it's the Independence Swing!

Am I crazy, or was there a Simpsons episode featuring similar lyrics -- those, of course, being meant as satire. Anyway, there is apparently a reason why everyone always uses the same old songs for 4th of July fireworks -- 'cause all the new ones really, really suck. But the fireworks were fun. And at least it got me out of the hot, sticky apartment for the day.

And, no, Shazia is still not gone, and that is all I'm going to say about it right now.
