Class #4
Previous Entry :: Next Entry

Mood:
Tres sleepy

One thing's fer sure. I'm getting plenty of time with this class! We didn't break until 11:45 last night, but it was a good session. The main thrust of today's lesson was to pitch ourselves. Not our work, but ourselves. We then got feedback on the pitches.

But first, we complemented each other. So whoever was up to pitch first listened to the positive things everyone else thought about us. That was the hardes part (not giving, but taking). However, there were no surprises for me in what others saw. I'm pleased, too, with what the others see of me, because it tells me that I am the person I'm trying to be.

Oh, and someone said that they're convinced I'm good at my craft -- even though he hasn't read my work -- because of my confidence in my writing and the list (however brief) of name of people in the industry who've read and liked my work.

So, my homework for this week is to generate a list of names of potential mentors for myself -- all at the producer/executive producer level. People I can go to once in a while to bounce questions off of (either career or writing). I should also come up with a mentor letter to solicit professional mentors. I'm pleased with this assignment, because it says much to my level and career position -- I'm not an amateur, I'm a writer, and I'm looking for people to guide me.

Next week, I'm going to class on Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday, John Copeland (one of the men behind Babylon 5) will come as a guest, so it's a great chance to meet him. I'll also be able to check him out as a potential mentor. Apparently, John is currently working on bringing science fiction movies and TV shows to life.

Oh, my pitch? See above in the about me section. I distilled it from the feedback and suggestions I'd gathered from my friends. Thanks guys!
