David at swim class

This was going to be my big transition year. No having to be in the pool with a terrified Rose. No having to nurse or hold or chase a squirmy David. David was going to start big boy swim class, the one where he sits on the pool steps, listens to his teacher, and plays with her. I was going to sit on the sidelines, operative word "sit" and cheer them both on.

Not so fast, Debby.

David would like to just sit on the sidelines and watch. He has said so many times. I committed myself to this two week session of swim lessons. So, every morning I fight him into his swim suit which is no fun right there. Then I co-teach the class. That's fun once I actually cajole and trick David into the water. He does quite a bit of grinning and playing in between insisting that he wants to get out. He's doing some kicking, and he's a great bubble blower, but basically this is not working. The whole point of a class like this is to get kids comfortable and happy in the water. Forcing him to be in the water does not seem like the way to make this happen. We've got two more days and then I'm not signing him up for the rest of the summer. He'll have plenty of other opportunities to get in the water with me. Maybe one day he'll say yes.
