hurrah for closed streets and community!

Tonight, the city closed the main drag in my neighborhood and everyone, I mean everyone, came out to play.

Of course, there were the artists, it was Art Walk night after all; the balloon man; buskers; the woman showing kids how a spindle works; and the math games people showing how to make a tetrahedron from straws and pipe cleaner. The Children's Hospital put out toys and gave away jump ropes. The make-more-public-space people drew on the sidewalk with chalk and set up hulahoops.

David wove his Spiderman bike in and out of the toddlers and strollers and managed not to knock anyone over. We saw his preschool teacher, my dance teacher, literally half the people that live on our block, the people that used to be our next door neighbors, two of the guests from Rose's birthday party and their entire families, and a friend we hadn't seen in eight months with whom we immediately made a playdate.

David and I chatted and hugged and played our way up and down the street. It was great.
