This morning I had a lovely breakfast here at Cynthia's house (including a pluot that had dark, almost beet-purple flesh) and then Cynthia and I took Zara for a three and a half mile walk out some walking trail through some fields. I have no idea where we actually were (ah, the joys of being on vacation where one is not required to be in charge of anything) but it was beautiful. There were some high clouds, but it was hot and clear and sunny and gorgeous, and we could see for miles. The mountains were stunning, the fields were blooming, the dog was romping.... great fun.

And then this afternoon, Cynthia, Vinnie and I went on a two-hour white water rafting trip with the Clear Creek Rafting Company. We did their intermediate level trip, which included some Class II, III and IV rapids. There were a couple guys, a father and son, in our boat with us, as well as our guide, and they were definitely not taking their jobs as paddlers as seriously, but we managed to be a fairly good team despite that. The son (he was 16 years old) kept paddling against Vinnie's rhythm (Vinnie was our lead guy) whenever we had to back paddle, so he kept whacking his paddle into Vinnie's, and I was sitting behind him, so then I kept whacking my paddle into his because I was synchronizing with Vinnie... sigh. But he was solid on the forward strokes, which we did more frequently, so that was okay. And his weight on the join between the wall and the seat of the boat kept the seat pressed down on top of my right foot, which I had wedged in as an anchor. So the one time I thought I was going to go flying out of the boat, I flew into the boat instead. Much better to fall in than to fall out. The top of my foot might be slightly bruised from having his 180 pounds on top of it for most of two hours, but I kind of figured that was better than me flying out of the boat.

It was really thrilling and wild and fun. I totally want to go again. Perhaps it wasn't so great for my neck, but I would still do it again. That's what ibuprofen and chiropractors are for, right?
