My brother alerted me to this story at the Houston Chronicle:

One Houston teen was killed and another seriously wounded when unidentified gunmen opened fire on their car in north Houston late Tuesday, police said.

Kulika Long, 18, of the 3900 block of Stableridge Drive, died after being shot several times in the head, Houston homicide investigators said. A passenger in Long's car, Jason Meas, 17, of the 2200 block of Ravenwind, was shot in the forehead and taken to Ben Taub Hospital, where he was listed in fair condition today.

Both victims were students at Westfield High School, according to officials with the Spring school district. The shots were fired from a red sports utility vehicle and a white Acura that sped away, police said.

Long, Meas and three friends were driving home from an event at the high school around 9 p.m. Tuesday and stopped for a stop sign at the corner of Cambury and Rankin Road when the shooters' cars pulled up next to them, police said. Occupants of the SUV and Acura opened fire, striking Long in the driver's seat, and Meas, who was in the back seat behind him, police said.

Other occupants of Long's car were driving the two to the hospital when Harris County sheriff's deputies saw their car speeding on Ella Boulevard and stopped them. Deputies then called an ambulance, but Long was already dead, police said.

It's always sad to hear about things like this happening, but it also hits close to home when it happens to someone who goes to your alma mater. These types of things are REALLY hard for schools to recover from. It's going to be hard for all of their classmates to pick up the pieces and carry on. I wish them the best.

Although it seems pointless in light of the events of above....

While I'm on the subject of Westfield High School, I also wanted to tell everyone that earlier this month, the Westfield Girls High School Basketball Team won the Texas 5-A State Girls Basketball Championship.

So not only does Westfield have the best Marching Band in the country, it has the best basketball team in the state too.
