New starts, little kiddoes, and eight amazing years

This past weekend was surprisingly relaxing for being just a few days before we blast off out of here for a week back in Iowa with my sister and her family. Hard to believe I've not been back to my home state for over 11 years now. I don't really miss my hometown all that much, though I'm interested in seeing the changes, but I do miss Iowa City quite a bit. That's a cool town, and I hate that I'll miss seeing SarahP by a day or two. Ah well...

I was able to skim most of the Joseph Campbell book about the Hero's Journey on Saturday while Drew napped and Elizabeth went in to work to pick up some hours. A good book, but towards the end I just flipping pages. I got out of it what I needed for my new novel.

Yeah, you heard that right -- a new novel. I still have some minor tweaking to do to the baseball one, but I really wanted to get a start on this new one, which I'm calling Sixteen Miles from Everywhere. It's a bit of a change for me, but in a way it's a return to what I started writing for in the first place. Check out an excerpt to find out more details.

Also this past weekend we went out to my parents' to visit the latest addition to our extended family, little Gavin, who was born to my cousin and his wife two weeks ago. Man, he's so tiny compared to Drew, and he looks like a little man already. He's all arms and legs (and his little legs are still all bent up from being inside his momma). Amazing how fast the kiddoes grow, and how fast time flies.

Which brings me to today's date -- June 28th. On this day in 1997, Elizabeth and I were decked out like this (sorry it's so grainy):
Look at those young kids, getting all married and stuff!
Happy eighth anniversay, Lizzie! You're the best, and you've made my life better in ways I'll never fully comprehend.

To compare and contrast, here's a photo of Lizzie and me from a week ago -- while she's gotten more and more lovely, I've just gotten rounder and hairier:
Eight years later...

A nifty little side-effect of trying to find an electronic version of a wedding picture is that I found a photo of Elizabeth from her younger days, and I swear, at first glance you'd think this was a picture of Drew:
Drew's mama, oh about three decades ago!
Too cool. Genetics is a fascinating thing, eh? Later.
